Any good fitness trainer will tell you that Strength Training Form means everything when you exercise. What exactly does it mean to have good form and how do you know if you have good form when you exercise?
What does it mean to have good Strength Training Form?
Having proper Strength Training Form means that your body is in the correct position when you perform an exercise. This includes how you hold your posture, how you control your body, and how you control the equipment you are using.
Why Is Good Strength Training Form So Important?
Your body is designed with structural strengths and when you hold and move it the right way, you maximize and zone in on the power that you have.
If your body is moving in the wrong position, you put excessive strain on your joints, muscles, and tendons. This incorrect form sets you up for injury. Plus, when you have poor form you end up putting the wrong emphasis on what muscles you are working. Quite often what will happen is that your poor form aggravates a pre-existing structural weakness such as shoulder or knee problems.
How To Learn Proper Strength Training Form
Understanding Good Strength Training Form starts by paying attention to how your body works and where your power comes from. You have two shoulders, two arms, two hips, two legs… your body’s musculoskeletal system has a pair of almost everything to create balance.
Your spine and torso is the center where everything comes together. Your body receives its power and is able to be balanced because of your midsection. Keeping this core section of your body stable enables you to have proper Strength Training Form.
Some Common Strength Training Form Mistakes
Poor Knee Alignment- Check your knees! You want to make sure that they are tracking in line with your hips and ankles. Do not allow your knees to come together or bow out of your hip to ankle line when you are performing strength exercises for your legs.
Raised Shoulders- This is a big one. All to often you may have a tendency to hold tension in the shoulders. Make a point to pull your shoulders down and open your chest by squeezing your shoulder blades towards each other to avoid and improve this issue.
Weak posture- Your posture is essentially your core. If you have poor posture when you are lifting weights you will never get the results you are looking for and may end up with joint and back pain.
How To Avoid Poor Strength Training Form
It’s tough to know if you are moving right without seeing yourself. One way to check your form is to watch yourself move in a mirror. Look at your posture. Check that everything is balanced. You need to learn how it feels to move correctly.
Get somebody to help you. Find a workout buddy who can help you out- as long as they know what to look for. Better yet, ask your personal trainer to check your form and give you ways to remember how to move properly. After even just a couple of sessions you will understand where your personal weaknesses are and what you need to focus on when you workout to maintain good form.
