Functional Strength Training
Functional Strength Training has become one of the main focus points in today’s modern fitness workouts. More and more people are becoming aware that exercise is about going further than creating the perfect body or losing weight.
Hopefully you also realize this and have come to this page because you know that the real purpose of exercise is to become physically fit so normal activities and challenges in your life become easier.
What is Functional Strength Training?
Functional Strength Training is exercise that promotes a higher quality of health through correct movement. It prepares your body for the activities that you do everyday and for the other times in life that challenge your muscular strength and endurance.
Carrying groceries, lifting up your kids, climbing stairs, getting up and down from the floor, moving furniture…you get the picture. Once you understand how to move with whole strength you can help prevent straining and injuring your body.
The Basics of Functional Strength Training
Every motion that you make in regular life requires multiple muscles to work at the same time. When you perform Functional Strength Training Exercises you train your body how to move its muscles as a unit. This training technique requires you to engage your core properly and be aware of controlling more than one body part at a time.
Not every exercise in the gym duplicates the Functional Strength Training concept. Some exercises that require you to lie on your back or sit and then push or pull weight do not necessarily replicate an action you would normally do in real life. While these exercises do build specific muscular strength, Functional Strength Training fortifies your body as a whole in the way it moves.
How Can I Include Functional Strength Training Into My Current Workouts?
One very simple way to start is to get off the weight bench. By standing and balancing while you do an exercise, your whole body is used- just like in real life activities.
Do exercises that replicate motions you normally do and that require you to use more than one muscle group at the same time. Get away from thinking that you only want to focus on your arms or your chest for the duration of your strength training. Look at and work your body as a whole, the way it naturally moves.
Use One Leg At a Time…
If you think about it, there are very few activities that you use both sides of your body the same way at the same time. You walk one leg ahead of the other and you carry things with one arm while you use the other arm for something else.
Take this concept into the gym with you. It’s called unilateral training- you train one side of the body at a time. Single leg presses, alternating bicep curls and lunges are just a few examples of how you train one side of the body at a time.
It is common for one side of your body to be stronger than the other. If however, there is a significant difference between your two sides, one side of your posture may compensate and create chronic tight or sore muscles affecting your back and other areas. This is one place where Functional Strength Training helps to balance out both sides for a healthier body and posture.
Function Happens With Proper Form
Functional Strength Training requires you to do things with good form. If you chronically move and exercise with poor form you will develop musculoskeletal imbalances and over time cause wear and tear on your joints and tendons.
Functional Strength Training is all about moving your body correctly in a way that strengthens your deepest muscles. Learn how to move your body with proper alignment and posture.
A good way to learn how your body moves is to watch yourself workout in a mirror. It will also be to your advantage to work a little with a fitness trainer who knows about Functional Strength Training and can observe and help you correct any movement mistakes you may be making.
By knowing how to move and incorporate Functional Strength Training you will become stronger on a deeper level and be able to uncover the strong body that lies within!
